Reba came to Ohio Valley Beagles as a foster from Treasured Paws of Kentucky. Before that, she was at the Lewis County Animal Shelter in Vanceburg, Kentucky. In the shelter, she was completely shut down. She sat in her kennel with her tail tucked tight. When someone picked her up, she froze. There was no smile and no wagging tail, only a small body under heavy stress.
Reba is an 18 pound beagle mix. Shelter life is loud and busy even when staff give the best care. Constant kennel noise, limited space, interrupted sleep, new smells, strangers every day, and high stimulation with little time to rest all take a toll. Over time, that stress builds. Reba had not had a real chance to decompress. She needed a calm, consistent home where she could settle and exhale.
Bill Sherley at Ohio Valley Beagles stepped up to foster Reba. The change came fast. Photos and videos taken eight hours apart show her at the vet after pickup and later in her foster home, already starting to feel safe. Outside the shelter, a different dog began to emerge. Sometimes the dogs who struggle most in a kennel are the ones who need out the most.
When Reba was ready for adoption, she went to Berea Animal Rescue Fund. She was gentle and affectionate during a visit to Riverview Pointe nursing home and quickly won people over. She was adopted within two weeks.
